The Open Music Project is dedicated to creating spaces where people from all walks of life can come together, where words and language become unnecessary and social connection, inclusion, and a sense of belonging can flourish.

In 2016, we placed our first Open Piano in Vienna. The idea was simple yet powerful: a freely accessible grand piano in a public space, inviting everyone to play and listen. What happened next surprised even us. Strangers started talking to one another, making music, and sometimes even bringing their own instruments. An ordinary public square became a place where people connected through music.

The enthusiasm surrounding these events quickly revealed music’s unique ability to foster social inclusion and strengthen communities. Inspired by this impact, we founded our social music school DoReMi in 2018 using donations collected through our Open Piano events. At DoReMi, people from diverse cultural backgrounds learn together in paired lessons. Through our innovative Pay-What-You-Can–model, we make music education accessible while promoting long-term social participation and solidarity.

We believe that music connects people like few other things can. It creates meaningful encounters, overcomes linguistic and cultural barriers, and allows people to experience a genuine sense of belonging.

That is why we are committed to making music education and shared musical experiences accessible to as many people as possible – regardless of their background, income, or life circumstances. Through our Open Piano events, we transform public spaces into welcoming places where people meet naturally and connect through music. Through our social music school DoReMi we provide sustainable access to high-quality music education for everyone.

For us, music is much more than an art form. It is a powerful tool for social change. It builds confidence, encourages integration, creates new opportunities, and brings people together who might otherwise never meet.

With every Open Piano, every music lesson, and every new connection, we contribute to a more open, diverse, and inclusive society where everyone has the opportunity to participate in cultural life.

To make this vision a reality, we are committed to sustaining and continuously developing both our Open Piano initiative and our social music school, DoReMi. Through strong partnerships and sustainable funding, we aim to give even more people the opportunity to experience music, learn an instrument, and become part of an open and welcoming community.

We believe that when music connects people, it doesn’t just change individual lives. It helps shape a stronger society for all.
